Soil Percolation Test Procedure (EWB internship)

This is a soil percolation and infiltration rate test procedure that I’ve research and developed for my internship project.

Testing Procedures

Soil percolation test

  • Procedure
    • Drill at least three holes with a diameter of 15 to 20 cm and a depth of 91 to 274 cm,
    • Fill the holes with water,
    • Then measure for the amount of water decreases within a period of time,
    • Use the formula (Percolation = Amount of water (ml)Time taken (min)) to calculate for the percolation rate.
  • Equipment
    • Something to dig with
    • Water
    • Timer
    • Measuring stick
  • Standard for Effluent Percolation Rate (EPR)
    • Poor soakage – 10 litre/m2/day
    • Good soakage – 15 litre/m2/day

Soil infiltration test

  • Procedure
    • Fill a 30 by 20 cm container with soil and pressure it to make it compact like the ground
    • Cut a 5 inch (127mm) PVC pipe into a 20 cm piece and make a 5 cm, a 10 cm, and a 15 cm mark on the inside of the pipe
    • Then vertically bury 5 cm of the PVC pipe into the soil in the container
    • Pour water into the buried PVC pipe then start the timer
    • Then record the time when the water reaches each mark
  • Equipment/materials
    • 5 inch PVC pipe
    • 30 x 20 cm container
    • Soil
    • Water
    • Timer
    • Notebook & Pen
    • Marker
  • Source

Water flowing through the filtration

  • Procedure
    • Start the timer when the first drop of water get to the filter in the second pit
    • Stop the timer when the water comes out of the PVC pipe into the leach field
  • Equipment
    • Timer
    • Notebook & Pen

Human Cruelty (poem)

Description: This is a very short poem that I wrote to celebrate the world poetry day in my literacy class.

BOOOOM!

A giant mushroom-like blast filled the air

A new rocket has launched

A new tragic for the world to be scare

Human is Cruel

From China to India

Millions of dollar been invested

Just to give the world a new fear

Human is Cruel

United State and North Korea

The conflict is always there

Just because of the stupid nuclear

Human is Cruel

Creating peace with guns

Nothing has changed

And yet, it’s not just begun

You see, Human is cruel!

American History Through Literacy Class

We start of the year in our literacy class by developing our English skills through learning about American history. Since many of us are going to take the SAT, Cara, our literacy facilitator wanted us to get more exposure to the American history. Therefore, we read many articles about various of topic related to the American history: Native Americans, the American Civil War, American Immigration, American Meat Packing Industry, and America in World War Two. By using online websites such as Commonlit and Newsela, we’re able to read the articles then do the assessments which are really helpful for me to assess my understanding. My most favourite article is an article about how the American industries help America to win World War Two. After reading this article, I have a much better understanding of the factors that lead The United States to the victory of World War Two. Moreover, I have realised that it takes there’s more than brave soldiers to win the war; the citizen, in fact, is a great cannon use to destroy the enemy. For instance, The United States won the war because their citizen work really hard to produce weapons to supply the solider. With a very productive supply line, America then took down Germany and Japan and claim the victory.

Boardgame Design Exploration

It’s the 5th of Liger! And this is the first exploration of the year! Welcome to game design exploration. Our goal for this exploration is to make a fun, educational game for the government school in Cambodia. At the beginning of the exploration, we had played a lot of game to get some idea of how the game work (game mechanic) and what part of the game that make it’s interesting and fun. The games that we play arePandemic, Catan, Forbidden Island, Ticket To Ride and Code Name. After play all of the game, we started to lead a game night even both in Liger and Phnom Penh. The reason why we did this because there are not a lot of Cambodian people who know about boardgame, so we want to introduce the game to them. So we lead game night every Thursday night in Liger, and we had lead two game night in Phnom Penh and we invited some people that we know and the people who are interested in our event on Facebook. Guess what!? We had a lot of fun with the game and the people who join us say that they want to join again next time.

Designing Process

At the start of the exploration, I think that making a fun game is really easy. But when I try to make it for the first time I couldn’t even make a playable game. So I change my perspective I start to think that making a game is really hard. But after a lot of practice, I change my perspective again. This time I think to make a game is easy but to make a fun/education game is the hard part. After making small games we move into our big game. The first big game that we make is about developing a country with less pollution as possible but seen it has too many variables that it seems that it should be a video game not a board game at all. After all, we went back and design small four more small games. After playtesting all the all the game we choose one game and work on it by combining some mechanic from the three other game to make it become a big game. Our new is develop a math game that design by one of our teammate. For now, the mechanic of our game is that you try to go around the country to answer math question for point to build different infrastructure around the country. The game end when all the question run out and the player with the most point win. So now this game seem really educational and fun, but we still didn’t have theme or story for it yet. Theme is one of the most important parts in order to make the game interesting. Theme is what make people want to play our game. So seven weeks past and we didn’t have the product for the government school yet. So we decide to have another exploration that going to run in the third term.

Culture Shock Description

Exploration Name: Culture Shock

Exploration Dates: October 6 – November 21

Number of Students: 13

Essential Questions:

What are the Khmer Beliefs?
What ceremonies do Cambodians always celebrate?
What is culture shock?
How do visitors to Cambodia feel when they get here and what can we do to help them?

Description:

Culture Shock is the Exploration that studied the culture in Cambodia. We learned about Khmer Beliefs, General Etiquette in Cambodia and Khmer Ceremonies. To learn more about these things we also did the research on the internet to get more ideas. There are many religions in Cambodia and the religion that nearly all of Cambodians believe in is Buddhism. In Buddhism we believe that when people do the bad thing they will go to hell when they die and they will stay in hell until their bad things are paid. Besides this if people do the good things, when they die they will go to heaven or when there is the next life they can (be) born in the rich family. We also learned about the Khmer Ceremonies. There are: Wedding ceremony, Funeral, Water festival and so on. Water Festival is the ceremony used to celebrate the past because Khmer ancestors used to be at war with other countries. So to help them when they were at war, the king made up this ceremony to help the soldiers feel stronger when they rode on the boat to fight. Cambodian culture also has traditional clothes for each ceremony. When people attend the funeral they should wear the white shirt with the skirt or pants. To be sure with the things that we learned, we also went to Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat, different temples, and the sculptures on the walls.

Psychology Description

Name of Course: Psychology

Learning Facilitator: Caroline

Number of Students: 13

Days we Meet: Monday/Tuesday

Advanced Enrichment Dates: Session 1: August 12-October 17

Course Description: In our Advanced Enrichment we learned about psychology. Psychology means how someone felt and how they changed their behavior and attitude. We learned about body language. Body language means how someone acted could tell other people by not speaking anything. We looked at the students and thought that students were introvert or extrovert people. Introvert means animals that don’t want to be loud they are just serene. Extrovert means animals that like to do fun things and be loud animals. Other things we learned were about optimism and pessimism. Optimism means thinking a good thing. Pessimism means thinking bad things like some people give up. We learned about positive and negative behavior. Example: when the mom played with the baby she was positive and the baby was happy, but when the mom was negative (it means the mom made the straight face) and then the baby was crying and trying to make the mom play with them. We learned about children’s behavior. When we gave chocolate to children and then we said if you eat chocolate it okay, but if children wait the teacher will give more chocolate. Some of the students ate the chocolate because they thought that the teacher was cheating them. Some of them waited because they wanted more chocolate to eat. We watched three videos. First video we watched was about two monkeys working together to open the box to get the foods to eat. Second video we watched was about human have two monkeys and they gave one monkey a grape and other monkey a cookie and how they behaved. Third video we watched was about two people played cards to cheat the monkey and how it behaved.
