Friction Lab

In any science class at Liger, we’re always doing some sort of experiment/lab in order to extend our knowledge and understanding. For instance, in a physic class, we were learning about coefficient of friction. So we made up a lab for this content. The lab was simple; so we have a plank of wood with a bunch of surfaces such as deference type of send papers and fabric. For the sliding objects, we got paper clip box, a puzzle block, and a domino. Ideally, we try to determine the minimum angle at which the object start sliding down the ramp. So basically my team slightly drop the object on the ramp with a certain angle and see if the object is sliding. If the object is sliding, we then degrees the angle of the ramp to find the minimum angle then record it. After we collect all the data, we wrote a small science report about the lab.

Khan Academy

One thing that I like about Liger is independent learning. So we do not just learn in the class with our facilitator there to guide us, in fact, we got opportunities where we’re practice by our self to develop our skill in and outside of the class. For example, math is such a hard subject and a struggle for me and the only way to get better at it is to practice as much as possible. So our teacher introduces a really powerful website to us called Khan Academy. In this website, we can learn new contents with video and practice what we had learned in class with many problems. By using Khan Academy it’s really helping me to improve my understanding of math with the tool that they provided. So now math is no longer a huge struggle for me.

Resourceful Week – Scavenger hunt

Liger 2017-2018 academic year kick off pretty different from last year. The first week of school Liger start with a brand new schedule called the resourceful week. For the whole week, we were working on skills that would help us with our future project like phone call etc. My most favorite part of the week was city scavenger hunt. So basically in a group of four students, we traveled the city in order to complete our mission without any adult with us. My team had a mission to buy a medical equipment and to copy some chapters of an AP statistic book. It was a good challenge for all of us since it’s our first time traveling the city by our self. In order to complete the quest,  we all work very hard get what we need which is the urine test kit. We walk into a bunch of pharmacies to find it but there’s none; we take the opportunity to ask the people who work there if they know any other place where which would sell this kind of stuff, so they point us to the bigger pharmacy which located at the Olympic market. While we’re on the tuk-tuk to the market, we came up with an idea which calls for help from the Liger’s nurse. We found her number on our name card and start calling. It turns out really helpful, the nurse told us directly the name of the shop and we get what we want. Next, we settle out to find a printing shop to copy chapters of the SP statistic book. After we copied the book we headed back to a Brown Coffee to end our mission. I learned so much from this trip but most importantly is that I’m now much more adept at going out into the city by myself doing whatever I needed to do.

Me with my teammates sitting out at a park waiting for the book to copy.

Boardgame Design Exploration

It’s the 5th of Liger! And this is the first exploration of the year! Welcome to game design exploration. Our goal for this exploration is to make a fun, educational game for the government school in Cambodia. At the beginning of the exploration, we had played a lot of game to get some idea of how the game work (game mechanic) and what part of the game that make it’s interesting and fun. The games that we play arePandemic, Catan, Forbidden Island, Ticket To Ride and Code Name. After play all of the game, we started to lead a game night even both in Liger and Phnom Penh. The reason why we did this because there are not a lot of Cambodian people who know about boardgame, so we want to introduce the game to them. So we lead game night every Thursday night in Liger, and we had lead two game night in Phnom Penh and we invited some people that we know and the people who are interested in our event on Facebook. Guess what!? We had a lot of fun with the game and the people who join us say that they want to join again next time.

Designing Process

At the start of the exploration, I think that making a fun game is really easy. But when I try to make it for the first time I couldn’t even make a playable game. So I change my perspective I start to think that making a game is really hard. But after a lot of practice, I change my perspective again. This time I think to make a game is easy but to make a fun/education game is the hard part. After making small games we move into our big game. The first big game that we make is about developing a country with less pollution as possible but seen it has too many variables that it seems that it should be a video game not a board game at all. After all, we went back and design small four more small games. After playtesting all the all the game we choose one game and work on it by combining some mechanic from the three other game to make it become a big game. Our new is develop a math game that design by one of our teammate. For now, the mechanic of our game is that you try to go around the country to answer math question for point to build different infrastructure around the country. The game end when all the question run out and the player with the most point win. So now this game seem really educational and fun, but we still didn’t have theme or story for it yet. Theme is one of the most important parts in order to make the game interesting. Theme is what make people want to play our game. So seven weeks past and we didn’t have the product for the government school yet. So we decide to have another exploration that going to run in the third term.

Coding Exploration

This is the last round of exploration before summer. This is a special exploration where we have a professional coder as our teacher. In this exploration we learn how to make game. The game that we make are connected to the economic book that we have wrote. In this game we use four programming language such as JavaScript, HTML and CSS. We mainly use JavaScript for our game. So how we work together as a team with 16 student? So first we divide into four group with four student each. There are Engine team, Data team, User Interface (UI) team and Tutorial team. The Engine team is designing the structure of the game. The Data team Is the team that organize all the data and event in the game. The UI is really important it’s the one who make animation and design what the game should look like. Last but not least Tutorial team is team is work on teaching people how to play our game. So I’m in the data team. My team work is to organize all the data for the Engine team to work with. At last we can indicated that we done 90% of the work but it’s turn out that our game would work in the slow computer.

Entrepreneurship

This is my fourth year in The Liger Learning Center. One of the most important exploration in this was entrepreneurship. In this exploration we learn how to make a business which is making chili sauce. All the student need to be in this exploration. So we have four group of 12 to 13 students in each exploration term. I am in the third group of this exploration. In each exploration we divide into many deference team to work on deference thing. In this round of exploration we have four deference team. They are Label team, Outreach team, Legal team and Product Development team. So I’m in Label team. In the last two exploration we have notice how important is the label. The reason that the label are really important is because label is the first thing see from your product. Another reason why it so important is because label is the one that make your product jump out of from other product. But It turn out we not really good at turning the drawing into victor, professional label. So we got a really good opportunity to work with a professional company for free. We work with a company named CBX. CBX is a brand agency based in New York city and it has it’s office all over the country. We work with one of its office in Minnesota. We video call with them once a week. The First week that we mate them they give a very good idea on how to named your company (name bucket). Then we draw out the label from the name that we have. Then we sent them the drawing to turn it into victor design. After we get the first draft we give them feedback to change some part of it so we get what we want.
This the Label that they that we have.

Sonnet Poem

In literacy class with Jan we mainly learn to improve our pronunciation. We also learn how to write poems. This is a poem that I has made with my friend (Chhoeu).
Please enjoy!

The boys are walking to an awesome park
Then they both went to swim in a blue sea
They have a contest to race with a shark
They didn’t want to cause they weren’t ready.

After the race they went to get some drinks
The choices are coffee, coke and Pepsi
They both wanted to purchase their own thing
One guide buy coke and others buy coffee.

They are still wanted to do a treatment
There were many people who in the room
They both get no place to join an event
After that they heard a sound boom! boom! boom!

They both were thinking that it was a crime
Then they both got to the checkout ontime.

Drone Expert

This is the first exploration that lead by students. My exploration was about drone. In this exploration we learn how to fly and take footage with drone. First we started with a cheap plastic drone. Then when comfortable with it, we bought a professional drone which is DJI Phantom 3 Advanced. With this new drone we use it for a new business which is drone service. We have a new company name Cambodia Aerial Photography (CAP). This business is started by Four students from the Liger Learning Center (LLC). The Reason why we started this business is because we just want to pay back to LLC for the price of the drone. So far we have 8 pilot (4 boys, 4 girls).

Marine Conservation

Marine Conservation is a group of 12 student from Liger Learning Center that learn about marine conservation during a seven week long project. The group researched and learn more about marine life and understand the recent problems of marine ecosystems in Cambodia. The goal of this project is to protect Cambodia marine ecosystems. To accomplish this goal we work very hard to finish our Proposal for a Feasibility Study of Algal Farming as an Alternative Livelihood for Cambodian Fishermen. This document explain the problem of Cambodia marine ecosystems, possible solution, proposal for a feasibility study for Liger student in study year of 2016-2017 and information about what we doing in pilot exploration. We took a field trip to Koh Seh in Kep province to visit MCC Marine Conservation Cambodia. MCC is a organization that protect Cambodian marine ecosystems. We spent 1 week with them and we got to learn so many thing from them. We learn about marine organism, history of the island and last thing was snorkel and scuba diving. We not just learning we also do beach clean up. We collect about 130 kg of trash in an hour.

Ministry day

On 1/12/15 is a special day for Liger. There are around 50 top educator from Phnom Penh coming to Liger, to see what Liger education look like. All of the student were presenting to them about part of Liger learning program. I was presenting about one of Liger learning program called STEAM. STEAM is stand for Science Technology Engineering Art and Math. In STEAM we have an activity name Roller Coaster. In this activity we let them build a roller coaster with a highest. In this activity the student be the guy who giving some idea but not helping them building it. We use the foam representing roller coaster track and mable representing roller coaster car. The resent that we do the roller coaster activity because we want to shear them how we learn STEAM in liger. Also we want to show them that they can find a simple activity in their school that make student understand the concept easily.
